Citi 97.3 FM had this to say to Ghana and to remind us as Muslims in Ghana that we are “terrorists” and some of us who are not already “terrorists” are now listening to the “terrorist” preacher Dr. Bilal Philips. Bellow is the link to the story. As a media house, I expected them to do better in finding out the truth rather than hiding behind the so called “fact” about Dr. Philips. Now, In the story Citi FM made, it’s clear that they as a media house believe DR. Philips is a “terrorist” and is in Ghana to preach terrorism by linking the story to some Ghanaian joining ISIS and to the Gitmo duos. Below is my explanation.
“…and he runs what he calls an Online Islamic University where he offers free tuition and certificates to Muslims who enroll.”
I wonder what they mean by “…what he calls…” in the above phrase. Are they not trying to play down on the credibility of the institute, and wouldn’t this look like a personal attack?
“He has already delivered lectures on the theme “Insurgency In God’s Name: Revelation or Rebellion.”
Here, all they did was to give the title of lecture without giving their readers the benefit of knowing what the lecture entails. A clear malicious attempt to tell Ghanaians he is lecturing us on how to be “terrorists.” If as a media house you know he has already delivered a lecture on the theme “Insurgency In God’s Name: Revelation or Rebellion.” Why didn’t they provide the content of the lecture since they know he had already delivered it.
“It is unclear whether the country’s national security is aware Dr. Bilal Philips’ activities in the country, and whether he is indeed preaching extremism.”
The above sentence is another malicious attempt to brand Dr. Phillips a “terrorist” in Ghana.
Couldn’t they have followed him secretly as a media house to really know what he is preaching? And who he is meeting up with? Do not get me wrong, I am not saying they should be the security for the nation but we all know as a media house they have journalists whose sole focus is investigative journalism to unravel to the public what is being done behind the curtains.Couldn’t they have invited him to one of their shows to answer to some of the allegations leveled against him?
He delivered the Friday sermon at Adabraka 2000 Ltd Mosque where one of Citi FM’s staff Umaru Sanda Amadu sometimes prays on Friday and in that sermon he spoke against terrorism. And that mosque is just about three (3) minutes walk from Citi FM.
If per Citi FM’s report, we Muslims in Ghana are or willing to become terrorists, then they have lost it. And my reason being that their FM station is surrounded by Muslims and in fact, one or two people I know are in their midst as Muslims. And there is no security at the station. Yes, there is no security because the person they put at the gate cannot be said to be a security person who can withstand common shout (to scare) from the gate. If indeed “we are” or “want to be” then that station would not have been in operation by now.
Well, it’s still not too late Citi FM, he is in the country, if you wish to get him you can either in person or by phone. Do not do copy and paste because US said they suspected him. How many times have they imprisoned innocent people because they suspected them and they never charged them because they found no evidence to warrant charge.
We as Muslims in Ghana have been living peacefully with everybody. And I always say that if one wants to know how peaceful we are, the person should take a tour of the Zongo communities and he/she would see churches, and not just churches but big churches that are even bigger than most of our mosques in the Zongos. And they are not ghost churches but churches that are filed to capacity on Sundays. And some of the Churches are just a stone throw away from mosques.
